Major project: Cover

 Hi,

In this blog, I will be showing the process of creating my editorial cover and the idea behind it.

To create my Cover I used the digital software Pixlr.

As I mentioned in my previous blog posts, my inspiration for my editorial is DAZED. So, I searched how DAZED does the cover and gathered inspiration.

(For a more extensive explanation on how to use Pixlr, I would definitely recommend you to check my previous blog posts.)

Creating my cover with Pixlr

I started by choosing a template and then chose the option ''add'' and then clicked on ''image''.

///
I uploaded a strong blue picture to use as the background, when I looked at the DAZED covers I saw that they mainly used blank or colourful strong backgrounds. So, that is what I decided to do.

///
Then as I mentioned in my previous blog posts about my research, I said that I wanted to use celebrities to capture more attention from my target audience, in this case, its Bella Hadid wearing a corset. So, I once again uploaded an image by using ''Add" and click on "image".

///
I started to cut out the image by clicking on the scissor option and choosing Mode>Remove.

///
I tried to use all the tools to make the image as smooth as possible.

///
Once the picture was cut out I decided to add the headline which is my editorials name "CALAMITY". By clicking on Add>Text.

///
Then I changed the size and font as wished, I also mentioned this in my previous blog post on how I got inspired by DAZED to use a big and clear font for my cover's name.

///
Once it looked like this I decided to add some simple texts, to make it clear to the audience what to expect from this editorial.

///
With the text, I tried to capture the audience's attention by using the words Trend and stylish. And make them believe that they really should read it because it is made for them.

///
To give them an idea of what to expect from this editorial, I added a little text by mentioning the corsets.

///

FINAL RESULT

COVER

I personally loved the outcome of the cover because of how simple yet powerful it is.

Major project research

 Hi,

In this blog, I will be writing about the research I have done for my major project which is in my case a Fashion editorial.

In my previous blog posts, I have talked about a few websites and I have also talked about the layouts and so on. However, in this blog, I will be focusing more on my own editorial.

What is a Fashion editorial?

Editorials are used to illustrate a story, article, text, or idea within the context of a magazine or to embellish a certain theme visually. it can be in any genre: photojournalism, fashion, portrait, sports, landscape, etc. Editorial fashion photographs may also tell a story themselves without a written word or may be accompanied by a short topic or title of an intended story.

My audience

One of the most important aspects of an editorial is its name. If the name is not interesting or creative enough people will more likely go for another editorial instead of yours. The reason for this is when creative names are being used such as words that are not common or maybe even never heard, people will be interested in the editorial to get to know more about it and maybe even look up the name its meaning. This way you will attract an audience in an easy way, therefore, while choosing your name you also have to think about your audience/target that you are working on to attract. In my case, it is the teenagers and young adults which is why I have to come up with a creative name to capture their attention.

 Name of my editorial

With DAZED being my biggest inspiration while creating my own editorial I decided to look up what the meaning of DAZED was which is: Very confused and unable to think clearly. And I think that this is a really good choice of name for an editorial that, its audience is focused on teenagers and young adults. So, I looked up words that are not common and are not being used very often, however, I did not succeed to find a name that really fits a fashion editorial and is creative. One of my biggest inspiration sources is music. That is why I listened to music to find a word that will perfectly fit my editorial.
CALAMITY - An event causing great and often sudden damage; A disaster. This is a word I found while listening to a song and what I realised is that this word is not used very often and is capturing attention. So, that is exactly why I decided to use this as the name of my editorial. The name is different and it has a meaning that can be seen in two different ways. It can be seen as bad or it can be seen as the editorial leaving a bomb behind (the good kind leaving the audience blown away) by the articles it has.

Research class exercise

 Hi,

This blog is a class exercise.

I am going to answer a few questions:

  • Name something you have researched in the past for art, design and media.
  • Explain how you researched this.
  • What facts did you discover?
  • What new conclusion did you establish?

Name something you have researched in the past for art, design and media.

I have researched some online editorials, the one that I focused on more was the editorial DAZED.

Explain how you researched this.

Firstly, I searched for editorials on the internet so that I could see the different layouts and uses of the editorial of each website. The one that most captured my attention was like I have said before the website DAZED. Then I looked up this website and tried to get as much information as I could by using the internet.

What facts did you discover?

Dazed is a British magazine created in 1991

Jefferson Hack and Rankin launched Dazed and confused as an alternative style and culture magazine.

The title became a lightning rod for cultural provocation.

The magazine became a movement, growing into the agenda-setting publishing powerhouse Dazed media.

Today, Dazed magazine continues to champion radical fashion and youth culture.

    Defining the times with a vanguard of next-generation writers, stylists and image-makers.

What new conclusion did you establish?

DAZED magazine brought me to the conclusion that in order to be actually being read, you have to make sure which generation you will be attracting. Really focusing on one audience. When you do otherwise it will not really have an audience and it will confuse people. DAZED is doing an amazing job by really focusing on the next-generation and really playing with the website and magazine trying to capture their attention. It uses trends such as fashion, music, photography&art, film&tv, life&culture, and so on.
But these trends are really being supported by strong images and texts, that will most definitely capture the attention of the audience they are working with.

Research INTO my major project

My project is to create a fashion editorial, so the research that I will be doing is about how I can do the layout, images, texts, and so on. By using other editorials as an example, and by trying to understand how it's put together.

Research THROUGH my major project

I will be looking at fashion editorials and magazines, I will also look at online editorials and magazines to see how it differs from each other and try to create a fashion editorial by using the information I got from the both.

For this, I will be using magazines I have at home and online websites. To create my editorial I will be using Lucidpress.

Research FOR my major project

For my project, I will be looking more deeply into different kinds of Fashion editorials.

Major project: Lucidpress

 Hi,

In this blog, I will be showing you the process of me trying out Lucidpress, this is digital software that I will be using to create my editorial.

Lucidpress

I started by watching tutorials on youtube, this will ease the process and will help me understand the Digital software better.

///
Then I opened the software and this is how the page looked after that I chose to sign up with google.

///
This is how the page looked like once I signed.

///
I then chose a template that I could work on to understand how the software works.

///
I started by widening the header by clicking and moving it, afterwards I changed the text by double-clicking on it and then changed the size of the font by using Font > Font size.

///
Then I changed the color of the header by clicking on it and choosing another color.

///
After that, I changed the other text and gave it another font.

///
Then I deleted the image on the background and added an own image by clicking on Image > My images.

///
To upload my image I clicked on ''Upload'' and then chose an image from my photos.

///
When I uploaded the image the texts were behind so I moved the image to the back by using Layout > Arrange > Send item backward.

///
I also wanted to try how to add a text so I tried doing that by using Text > Text > Sub-headings.

///
This is the final result of what my first time trying Lucidpress looks like. The software is very easy to use and whenever you do not understand something you can easily find tutorials on youtube about it.

Major project research process

 Hi,

In this blog, I will be talking about the research for my major project.

Corsets

I looked at some websites that wrote about the corset and ways to style it, and what I noticed that they mostly used celebrities to show the styles just like I was planning to do just to attract more attention that way and to make clear what I mean.

///

Then another website I found was in my opinion was a website with not too much effort in it, they kind of hurried to do the article. The images they put on there were not loading and some of them were missing. This is a website to remind me how-not-to do my own editorial.

Major project editorial research

 Hi,

In this blog, I will be showing the research I did for my editorial and the process.

EDITORIALS

Editorials are used to illustrate a story, article, text, or idea within the context of a magazine or to embellish a certain theme visually. it can be in any genre: photojournalism, fashion, portrait, sports, landscape, etc. Editorial fashion photographs may also tell a story themselves without a written word or may be accompanied by a short topic or title of an intended story.

Fashion Editorials

For my first research, I went on the site ''Fashion editorials'' (FE) where you can find a lot of different headlines and a great example of a fashion editorial.

///
This is how the homepage looked like. I noticed how they attracted attention by using celebrities their pictures and names, which can be useful while creating my editorial. I can use a celebrity wearing a corset to make people more interested.

///
Then when I clicked on a headline I saw that they used huge images and instead of making it boring with a lot of text they decided to keep it simple. To actually let the reader enjoy.

///

Lissome

The next editorial I looked at was the most interesting one and also the one I liked the most.

It has strong images with strong headlines which makes the reader really interested.

///
What I noticed here was once again the headline and then the use of a huge image to really attract the attention, then they wrote about it which in my case is going to be about the corset and the ways you can wear it. What I really liked about this editorial is the placement of the images, they are not put perfectly symmetrical or in order instead, they are placed here and there and that makes it fun for me to actually take a look at it.

Creating my portfolio page on Wix

Hi,

In this blog, I will be showing the process of creating my portfolio page on Wix where I will be showing the work that I am going to do this year in Digital Art.

You can find more about my Wix creating process in my previous blog posts, you should definitely take a look!

WIX

This is how the portfolio page looked when I opened it because the header and the background color were already done while creating the other pages.

///
Then I added the menu bar by clicking on ''Add > Menu > Vertical menus''.This is the menu bar I used on all the other pages.

///
Then by clicking on ''Apps'' I searched for flipbooks, this is what the tutor has recommended for the ones that are doing an editorial.

///
Flipfolio was the first flipbook I tried using but then I was not satisfied by the way it looked.

///
This is the way how it looked and I didn't think that it would be suitable for the editorial that I am doing.

///
I then tried using the other flipbook which I liked more and thought it is more suitable for my editorial.

///
Then I had to allow and add it to my Wix page.

///
I double tapped to start the editing process.

///
I was not able to make any process without actually uploading a pdf so, I uploaded my 3D media reflective just for the process and to understand how this works. After uploading it, I tried using a new transition which is ''Focus transition''.

///

FINAL RESULT
PORTFOLIO PAGE

This is the final result of my portfolio page for now, once I upload my actual project I know that the editing process might change and that it may slightly look different because it will probably be a different setup than just the 3D media reflective.
